Okay, you guys want experimental, and this is as experimental as it gets. This is an actual game that I thought up on the fly, so I hope I have the mechanics thought out right.

-------

The year is 1872. A weird overhanging feeling has been creeping into the town of Quail Ridge, Minnesota the past year or so. It gets heavier and more oppressive as time goes, but will sometimes cut back suddenly into nothingness, and the sensation is almost like a pulse that ripples through the small town as if by whim.

Every citizen feels it. Every person who chances to run through the town feels it. Even the animals feel it. It isn't necessarily fear, though it is sometimes. Sometimes its funny. Sometimes its sad. Sometimes its just weird.

The townsfolk have come to the conclusion that they've had enough of these constant ups and downs, and have scheduled a town meeting to discuss how they should deal with it. During the meeting, tempers (and everything else) flared and died enough to near confusion, but a decision was--eventually--made.

Some people should set out and try to find the cause, then eradicate the cause at all costs. Because, seriously, they were hardly getting anything done, here, and they were going to need production in order for the town to not be doomed to starve and freeze for the winter.

Or be abandoned, in any case. A lot of people are already packing, even though they usually have a change of heart the next second and unpack.

------

RULES:

Okay, here's where it gets weird and experimental-like. At the end of every post, you must end with a sentence that suggests the mood of the next post to be written (by whoever posts next, of course). The mood must be one of these 10:

FEAR LOVE JOY SADNESS CONFUSION HUNGER ANGER BOREDOM HUMOR LUST

The mood must be more than the general mood of the next post; the post must also elicit this very response to other characters or readers. For example, the first post ends:

Quote:
...So maybe he should just consider himself lucky and be happy with that.

... cuing the next post to be JOY. The next post should then have a character (or characters) in joy, or the content/nature of the post should make the other players reading feel joy by reading this post, or should make other characters by other players feel joy.

Now, every post might cue the following post to be something different, HOWEVER there are rules to this as well.

The first responding post (being JOY) has a JOY counter of 1. If the post ends with another JOY cue, the next post must have a counter of JOY 2. The counter gets a +1 every time the same emotion is picked in a row, and the higher the counter, the more JOY (or whatever) reaction and substance should be in the post. This means this needs to be a more joyful post than the last every time JOY is cued until someone chooses another emotion.

Lets say JOY accumulates a counter of 3. On that last JOY post, the person ends with a cue towards FEAR. The counter completely resets, and the next post has a counter of FEAR 1. The same rules apply to FEAR. The FEAR post may add to the counter, or change if they choose, of course. Every time someone changes the emotion, the counter resets back to 1.

At the end of the game, we'll vote about how effective people were and add up all the counters of posts that we figure fulfilled the criteria of the counters.

I know this is all really complicated, so you can ask questions in here, too. But here's some more rules for CHARACTER CREATION and USE:

You may make as many characters as you like, you may use them all as you wish, and you may use other people's characters as long as you keep them reasonably within character.

Here's the form for every character:

Name: self explanatory
Age: self explanatory
Sex: self explanatory
Appearance: self explanatory
Equipment: what they have on them to use
Attitude: how they act, so others have a better idea of how to RP them too
Skills: what they can do, like horseback riding
History: their bios, which can be as long or as short as you want

Okay, what do you think? Any questions?

Uh, wow. That's... interesting. You sure thought something up quick.

I think I understand the rules. I'll make a character or few maybe a little later when I can get my brain going for it.

Edit: A little problem with your back-story there, Pete; North Dakota won't be a state for another 100 years. Hell, there wasn't even a Louisiana Purchase, yet.

Oh. Whoops.

Well, I changed it, then. Minnesota 1872 (that's state's nearby, around in that time, and all I had to do was switch the 8 and the 7).

I'll make a couple characters. Might make more.

Name: Minister James Goodbar (everyone just calls him "Minister")
Age: 32
Sex: Male
Appearance: Dark brown hair with white coming in, cut short with really bushy sideburns. He has the sort of cut face that would look strong when you're younger, but now just looks about average. Grey eyes. Thick eyebrows that rather match his sideburns. His limbs look thinner than they might have when he was younger, but he overall looks average for his age. He tends to wear minister clothing.
Equipment: A cross, a Bible, his clothing, some matches and candles, and money.
Attitude: He acts like a typical minister of the era; charitable and patient, but unmistakably Bible-headed.
Skills: He knows the Bible pretty damn well. At least, the King James I version. And he can ride a horse functionally.
History: Minister James was born and raised in a different town more towards the West before coming down to Quail Ridge and becoming the minister there. In the last town he was in, he was more of a hooligan until he fell into a bad spot and had to live in a church for a while. By the time he left, he'd changed his ways completely and immediately resigned himself to studying the Bible and ministry

Name: Jesse and Jessie Neilson
Age: Both 11 years old
Sex: One is male, the other is female.
Appearance: Both have dirty-red hair and freckles, and actually rather tanned from running outside and playing all the time. They also both have the same juvenile-looking gap in their front teeth and strawberry-shaped faces. They tend to wear dirty, torn hand-me-downs that they share.
Equipment: Pocket change, wires, spools of thread, needles, little knives, rocks... pretty much anything that kids pick up and carry around.
Attitude: Mischievous kids. Not much more to explain it.
Skills: They can sort of horseback ride, but not as well as adults can. They're good at hiding, squirming, running, climbing, and lying to get their asses out of trouble.
History: They are twin brother and sister (for the sister, Jessie is short for "Jessica"), and they practically move as one. Both their parents have to work a lot, so they end up being left alone to cause a ruckus throughout the town.

Heh, they look like we're going to have fun messing with them. I'll make a couple.

Name: Sarah Patterly
Age: 27
Sex: Female
Appearance: Blonde, blue eyed, respectfully dressed and proportioned.
Equipment: Gas lamp, flint, fluid for the lamp, a basket of food, a kitchen knife, a blanket.
Attitude: She acts pretty much as a woman in her class would, which is proper enough for a woman, but strong enough to do the daily chores. She's completely devoted to her husband, and is very motherly to her children. She's a nice person in general but doesn't like it when people challenge her point of view.
Skills: She can do everything practically concerning animal husbandry and agriculture, and knows how to train and calm down animals. She's decently strong for a woman.
History: Her maiden name is Sarah Mason. She married the farmer Henry Patterly at age 14 and immediately had their first child, a girl named Pamela. Pamela recently is about to be married off as well, and she now has 5 other younger siblings since Sarah pumps out a new one every once in a while.

Name: Henry Patterly
Age: 34
Sex: Male
Appearance: Big, broad chested and muscular. Eats well and has a bit of a stomach for that. Brown eye and black hair. Tanned from all the outdoor work. Farming clothes.
Equipment: A hoe, a shovel, a saw, a hunting knife, keys to his tool shed.
Attitude: He might seem a little dim, but about the outdoors and everything to do with it, wild and farming, he's practically a genius. He's very down to earth and devoted to his little wife and his children, and acts like a typical father concerning them. He doesn't feel challenged by something he doesn't believe or understand; he instead just seems to ignore it.
Skills: Horseback riding, everything to do with raising a farm and hunting and all that jazz.
History: Henry was born on a farm that he later inherited from his father after he died. He married Sarah when he was 21 and had child after child with her.

Name: Sammy
Age: Somewhere around 40
Sex: Male
Appearance: Older black gentleman, pretty muscular but starting to show his age. Used to be thin but starting to gain weight as he gets older. He wears cheap clothes or hand-me-downs given to him mostly.
Equipment: Lucky bead necklace, club, some jerky, divining rod, bag of fortune-telling bones.
Attitude: Very reserved man that acts as though he'd seen everything, and probably has. He does tend to do what his asked of him without complaint, though he's quiet.
Skills: Fortune telling, using a divining rod to find water, general housework and farmwork, escape techniques, good with children and animals, and actually pretty good at fighting.
History: He was born in Barbados where he worked in the sugar cane fields at a young age. When he was taken away to America, the only thing he was able to keep was his bead necklace that was supposed to protect him from harmful spirits. After years of being a slave, he was able to escape to the north and settled down in Quail Ridge, where he does various odd-jobs for a living, right now mostly working as a hand on the Patterly farm.

How about you, funwithfire? Are you going to make any characters?

I will soon, as many people could tell you I tend to take a little longer than most for stupid reasons but I still get it done.

That was the stupid reason for the OA thing and that was because I don't know much Japanese, this time is mostly work related inability to think and irreparable damage brought on by the cake being a lie.

And if memory serves me correctly it is Volcano Wind.

Volcano wind, whatever. In Japan it's practically the same thing.

Who are you? What's that? Oh, what's that? What's that thing, no the other thing? Ooo, that thing has numbers on it. Ewww, what's wrong with your legs? Oh, you're the lady from the test. Hi! Where are we going? Are you coming back? Ooo, what's in here? Is that a gun?

Do you smell something burning?

Sorry to spam up your topic, Pete. If you played Portal, you'd understand, though.

Name: Gustav 'Gus' Bedlam
Age: 19
Sex: M

Appearance: A tall lanky individual with lightly tanned skin and shoulder length dark gray hair, much too gray for his age but his hair has always been like that. Gustav dresses in simple clothing often greens and/or browns and carries with him several bags containing merchandise.

Equipment: His clothing, his bags and the various wears within, and a scythe, left to him by his father, that he always keeps clean and sharp.

Attitude: Never much of one to fight he tends to keep out of most matters however when something seems wrong or out of place he may step in and assist, like if someone is being mistreated or seems to be acting strangely for them. Not much to leave an impression on the town folk but is generally known to bring in interesting items for trade.

Skills: Minor horseback riding, he's the type who if he stays on the horse longer than a couple minutes he'll be squirming so more often than not he leads the horse while it carries any extra goods he may have. A pretty good fighter, he might not like to but when needed he can hold his own. Aside from lacking rider talent he's pretty good with animals. Wood carving, making very beautiful carvings.

History: Born to a traveling merchant and his wife Gus learned what little he knows on the move never having much time to perfect many skills. After his fathers death at the hands of bandits Gus and his mother settled down in Quail Ridge then a few ago after his mother's passing he started to travel making frequent trips back.

Here one that I did after sitting down for 20 minutes and didn't get distracted by something shiny. Pick him apart if you wish, probably make more after I think again.

Looks good to me. I guess I can start the RP if you guys want and leave the try-outs open for if/when you guys make more characters or if your other members wake up and decide to join.

Uh, I can leave the try-outs open during the RP, right? I want to make sure that's not against the rules.

Okay. Sorry that I haven't been active and all and held stuff up. I was doing stuff for school.

I'll start it tonight. Hopefully after I start we can get some new members or something.

Would you make an OOC lounge topic in the Pub so we can keep track of those emotion counters?
